Election Day is right around the corner, and Crossroads Comedy Theater is looking to laugh and learn together with a new event: ‘Improv Meets Politics: A Weekend of Comedy and Chaos‘ at Plays & Players Theatre.
The multi-day event is set for Nov. 1 to 3, in Center City, and it will bring together a lineup of Philly’s best comedians and improvisers to produce sharp-witted and unique productions surrounding politics.
The first show, ‘Electoral Dysfunction: Comedy, Politics, Yelling!’ comes from host Tom Brennan (Marvel Entertainment) and “token, Never-Trump Republican” Robert George (Bloomberg Opinion). The duo will discuss and debate the news of the week with a panel of special guests (spanning improv performers.) The show will hit the stage this Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. and tickets run for $15.
Philadelphians have multiple opportunities to check out Crossroad’s next showcase: ‘Am Improvised Political Theater’ is set for Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, at 8:30 p.m. As the release describes, drawing inspiration from your suggestions and the adrenaline-pumping tropes of political action movies such as ‘Enemy of the State’, ‘Patriot Games’, and ‘Olympus Has Fallen’, the cast will craft a ridiculous, nail-biting narrative filled with high-stakes showdowns, cunning political maneuvering, and pulse-pounding action sequences.
Saturday (Nov. 2) will also feature ‘Study Hall: Political Science & History’ (7 p.m., $15) and the Improv Basics Workshop (4:30 to 6:30 p.m., pay what you can.)
The former features a special edition of Crossroad’s ‘Study Hall’ with short lectures from the history of American politics and afterward, improvisers will then spin the lectures into different comedic scenes. The organization also notes that Study Hall has been using lectures and laughs to entertain audiences across the United States for over a decade. Anyone interested in a special performance at your school, business, or organization can email StudyHall@xroadscomedy.com.
For the Improv Workshop on the other hand, this one day workshop for adults will teach you the building blocks of improv in a fun and supportive environment. As the website states, after participating, students “will see that improv is not just for performers, but is for everyone.”
All performances take place at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Place, Philadelphia. For tickets to these events and more, visit XroadsComedy.com/shows.
