The death of a Kensington toddler, whose body police described as bruised, was determined to be a homicide, authorities said Thursday morning.
Philadelphia police responded to a home on the 600 block of East Clementine Street just before midnight on Tuesday, where officers they founda two-year-old boy, Zyair Worrell, unresponsive, according to police. A woman, 23,who identified herself as Zyair’s mother was holding the toddler, and the woman’s 21-year-old boyfriend was also in the residence at the time.
The boy was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital, where hewas pronounced dead just after 2 a.m. Wednesday.
An examination of the boy’s body revealed a large laceration of his liver, bruising on his chest and right ear andan abrasion on his eye. The boy also tested positive for THC, the principal psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana. Homicide detectives are investigating the boy’s death as a child abuse case, according to 6ABC. The boy’s father, Khajir Smith, expressed his grievance over the loss of his son in a message posted Wednesday afternoon on Facebook.
