The Fourth of July is still a week away, but Philadelphians can get a taste of the festivities a bit early this Saturday with Independence Weekend at the Delaware River Waterfront.
Taking place June 27, 28 and 29, the spirited occasion features three nights of free entertainment, live music, and a grand finale in the form of a fireworks display.
“We’re kicking off the festivities early with one of the most memorable and meaningful times to be on the Waterfront,” says Joseph A. Forkin, President & CEO of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation in a statement.
“Whether you’re dancing to tribute bands, relaxing at Spruce Street Harbor Park, or watching fireworks light up the skyline, it’s a perfect way to start the holiday. This celebration reminds us of what makes summer in Philadelphia so special and we’re proud to offer it free and open to all, ahead of the Independence Day weekend.”

The fun kicks off on Friday with dancing and a live DJ at Spruce Street Harbor Park (6 to 10 p.m.) and will continue with an ‘80s tribute night in the Summerfest parking lot (beginning at 6:30 p.m.) To cap the night off, Shekhinah B will host an “After Work Session” at Spruce Street (7:30 p.m.)
Saturday will feature an array of entertainment taking place around different waterfront locations. The Liberty Flea will be housed at Cherry Street Pier (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), along with a workshop dubbed “Printmaking by the People” with Mural Arts (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and the Cosmic Rhythms dance party (2 to 10 p.m.)
Later in the evening, the Summer Sounds Concert Series will kick off (7:30 p.m.), and the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will perform at RiverRink Summerfest, as part of Wawa Welcome America (8 p.m.) The night will then feature a Fireworks on the Waterfront show at 9:30 p.m., with views of the show from Summerfest, Cherry Street Pier and Spruce Street Harbor Park.
Sunday will also feature an array of activities, with the Liberty Flea back again at Cherry Street (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), a Family Fun Day at Spruce Street Harbor Park with games, crafts and activities (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.), and a Skate with Characters session (with Captain Jack Sparrow) at Summerfest from 2 to 4 p.m.

All Independence Weekend events are free and open to the public. Food and drinks are pay-as-you-go. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot, enjoy local vendors, and explore all the seasonal attractions along the Delaware River.
Spruce Street Harbor Park for one is always a fan favorite, with food and beverage vendors sprinkled throughout the eclectic oasis, along with colorful lights, comfortable hammocks, floating barges and plenty of space to unwind.
The “Lazy Hammock” area features a performance venue with a stage, bar, and a 16-foot video wall. The Barge area boasts local beers alongside seasonal cocktails, while The Trading Post mimics a corner store with Philly-made snacks and goods. Food-wise, locals can find options from Chickie’s & Pete’s, Ay Burrito! by Philly Taco, Philly Tacos and Frozen Delights. Adult and N/A beverages can also be found throughout the waterside park.

Just a short walk away is Summerfest—but this locale mimics a boardwalk with beach-side attractions (in the form of carnival games) a rollerblading rink, and some seasonal treats. While here, visitors can also hop on a ferris wheel, ride a double-decker carousel, play some mini-golf, jump in a moon bounce, try your luck at some arcade games, or head to the Lodge Bar.
Food and drink wise, Skelly’s Amusements will be on site serving up funnel cake, lemonade, cotton candy and more, plus Chickie’s & Pete’s will also have a location here to serve up their famous Crab Fries, boneless wings, fried shrimp and other bites. Summerfest will also feature fare from Philly Taco offering options like tacos al pastor, burritos, and birria, plus cocktails and brews can be ordered from The Lodge Bar on site.
Locals can additionally find similar bites at Cherry Street Pier from Philly Tacos, along with cold treats from Irv’s Ice Cream. Irv’s puts its focus on small-batch, custard-based ice cream, and almost 100% of the base and toppings found in a cup or on a cone from the brand are homemade.
