Dennis Dixon is in the mix to be the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2013.
It could be a personal favor from Chip Kelly to his old friend, or a way to fire up Mike Vick and Nick Foles. Either way, Dixon is clearly in the competition after inking a futures contract Monday. Veteran Trent Edwards also remains on the roster.
“From my understanding, the job is open,” Dixon said Monday on a conference call. “As a competitor, I like, and anybody in their right mind would like, competition, and that’s what we have. And I’m quite sure Mike Vick and Nick Foles would say the same thing as well. We’re just excited to work and let the chips fall where they may.”
Dixon thrived at Oregon in Kelly’s system and accounted for 29 total touchdowns, while breaking quarterback rushing records, as a senior there. But that success hasn’t translated to the NFL, where Dixon has been mostly a journeyman. He’s only thrown 59 passes and spent last season on the Ravens’ practice squad.
Despite his recent failures, Dixon is looking for a second chance and a reunion with Kelly.
“If everybody buys into what Chip Kelly is selling, the sky is the limit,” Dixon said.
