Derek Green suspended his mayoral campaign Thursday, becoming the second former City Council member to drop out of the Democratic primary race within the past week.
Green, in a statement, did not disclose the reason for his decision; however, his campaign raised only a fraction of the money generated by the other top contenders – Allan Domb, Helen Gym, Rebecca Rhynhart, Cherelle Parker and Jeff Brown.
“It was an honor and privilege to run for mayor of my hometown, with the hope of restoring pride in the birthplace of our country,” Green said. “What we were able to accomplish together on this campaign was significant, and I look forward to continuing that work as a citizen.”
“I am deeply concerned, yet resolutely hopeful for the future of Philadelphia,” he continued. “Our city is at an inflection point, and voters will be choosing a leader who must guide us through some of our city’s greatest struggles.”
Green’s campaign team did not immediately respond to a question about whether he plans to endorse a candidate for mayor. There are now nine Democrats hoping to earn the party’s nomination on May 16.
Prior to entering the race, Green was elected to two terms as a council at-large member. His former City Hall colleague, Maria Quiñones Sánchez, suspended her mayoral campaign on Sunday.
