Detectives investigating suspicious deaths

Two people are in custody after a dead body was found in the back of a U-Haul truck Thursday morning in Northeast Philadelphia.

Officers made the discovery while responding to a call at around 9 a.m. on the 1000 block of Sanibel Street in Somerton. Police said the body was inside a trash bag alongside a weapon.

The driver of the U-Haul and a passenger were apprehended, authorities said. No further information was immediately released.

It’s the third suspicious death under investigation over the last two days.

On Wednesday night, a Comcast worker found an unresponsive man in his 30s in a lot on the 2800 block of Germantown Avenue in North Philadelphia. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at around 7 p.m.

Earlier, just before 4:30 p.m., a woman was reportedly found dead inside a vehicle parked at a gas station on the 4500 block of Germantown Avenue, 6ABC reported.

She was partially clothed, bruised and found lying on the floorboards of the passenger’s seat, according to multiple media reports.

In other crime news, a 48-year-old man was shot twice in the right thigh at around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday on the 1000 block of Wagner Avenue in Logan.

Officers rushed him to Einstein Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

One man was killed and another was hospitalized after shots rang out just before 12:45 p.m. Wednesday on the 3500 block of N. Warnock Street, also in Logan.

Authorities said 23-year-old Richard Weldon, who lived on the block, died of a gunshot wound to the back shortly after the shooting.

The other victim, a 40-year-old man, was shot in the left arm and taken to Temple University Hospital. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, police said.

No arrests have been made in the killing.
