Discount grocery chain open new location in Brewerytown

Elected officials cut the ribbon on Brewerytown’s first grocery store in more than a decade Thursday with the opening of Bottom Dollar Food.

The discount grocery chain marked the celebration by giving out reusable bags full of free groceries to the first 200 customers. The new location at 3101 West Girard Avenue is the sixth Bottom Dollar store in Philadelphia.

“I’d like to thank Bottom Dollar Food for seeing that the great neighborhood of Brewerytown would be the perfect place to take a chance and open a new store,” said City Council President Darrell Clarke, which represents the community. “It took some time, but residents here will finally have easy access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food.”

The store was the result of a longtime effort by Soloff Development, community groups and elected officials.

Bottom Dollar, based in Salisbury, N.C., has 56 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. It is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, which also operates Food Lion, Harveys, Hannaford Supermarkets, Reid’s and Sweetbay Supermarket.
