Dock Street, other local spots, put charity on the menu this month

It’s time to give back in a few delicious ways, with local Philly businesses offering different seasonal treats for a good cause.

For one, Dock Street Brewing Company has been offering its annual Pie Drive, and Philadelphians can join in to help out the cause until this Wednesday, Nov. 22. How does it work? All locals have to do is donate a pizza through Dock Street’s donation page, leave a few kind words to pass along, and the Dock Street team “will do the rest” to send some love to the Eliza Shirley House.

According to a release, the local organization has been providing housing for homeless families and children in Philadelphia for nearly 31 years. The case-managed emergency housing facility dons 35 semi-private resident rooms for up to 90 individuals, and it’s goal is to ensure families are housed in a safe, secure environment to get help with their immediate needs.

Representatives from Dock Street will drop off their freshest pies at the Eliza Shirley House during Thanksgiving weekend, and Dock Street Brewery has pledged to match a minimum of 20% of all pie donations as well. Since 2020, the brewing company has sent nearly 500 pizzas and sandwiches to shelters and hospitals throughout Philadelphia with the help of donations, and hopes to keep that tradition going strong in 2023. Down in Old City at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, Red Owl Tavern is also hosting a charity this month involving pies. The establishment’s Month of 1000 Pies initiative is back again this year, and aims to hit that goal by Nov. 30. Throughout November, 50% of all pie proceeds will be donated to benefit Philabundance with Coconut Custard pies and Sweet Potato pies available for pre-order (48 hours notice for pick-up at redowltavern.com.)

And last but certainly not least, MANNA’s Pie in the Sky is coming to a close, but Philadelphians can still donate money to the cause to help fund the preparation and deliveries of Thanksgiving dinners in 2023, on top of providing year-round services for people with acute nutritional risk from a critical illness such as cancer, chronic kidney disease, HIV/AIDS and more.
