Doc’s bittersweet symphony ends

Roy Halladay is as straight edge as they come. So, when the right-hander told reporters that if he had won the World Series, he probably would’ve retired, it was worth a follow-up.

You’re joking, right?

“Yes,” said Halladay.

Halladay’s first season with the Phillies was one for the record books. He threw a perfect game, tossed a postseason no-hitter and was on the mound when the team clinched its fourth straight NL East title. When the votes are tallied, he’ll likely walk away with the NL Cy Young. Still, not getting that ring has to stick in his craw.

“It’s definitely the most fun I’ve ever had and it’s bittersweet because obviously the goals we had as a team, you come up short of that,” Halladay said. It does leave a sour taste in your mouth.”

Halladay said he will take a few weeks off, then start doing light workouts at home. But once the calendar hits Dec. 1, he’ll be at the Phillies’ spring training complex, ready to go.

“I might take a week or so and jump right into that same program again,” Halladay said.
The groin injury that he suffered in Game 5 of the NLCS isn’t serious.

“It’s definitely not something they would operate on,” he said.
