Philly may be home to a variety of unique and green-ridden parks, but one park certainly takes the city to new heights. Cira Green on top of the Cira Centre South is the City of Brotherly Love’s own park in the sky, and this urban oasis is also home to one hotspot eatery—Sunset Social, now dubbed Sunset Socially Distanced in the midst of the current pandemic situation.
Sunset Social has been offering elevated park-goers a variety of enticing food and drink options all available every Tuesday through Saturday. Menu highlights include a chicken teriyaki bowl, an assortment of burgers (think plain, cheese, veggie and a few distinctive specialties), loaded hot dogs and fries/tots, chicken sandwiches, an ice cream sandwich and more. On the more spirited side of Sunset’s offerings, the hotspot also serves a plethora of drafts and cans options, wine, cocktails (both bottled and frozen with choices including a blood orange margarita, watermelon crush and others), sodas and more. But now, on top of the culinary and libation perks, Sunset Social is also debuting a whole season of fun jam-packed with events and specials that will last through October.
The events kick off this week on Aug. 5, but from here on out, each day of the week will hold something special for Philadelphians to enjoy. The best part about this line-up? Along with being an escape and enjoyable experience, most events also holds a philanthropic element to it as well.
Mondays will be health-conscious, and those looking to start their week off on a good note can join Philly Power Yoga and Thrive Pilates for weekly classes starting Aug. 10. According to the website, Hally Bayer (founder of Thrive Pilates) and Ella Cuda (instructor at Philly Power Yoga and Thrive Pilates) will lead the sunset yoga practice capped off with a bonus meditation under the setting sun. Ella will lead participants through an all-levels yoga flow aimed to strengthen, stretch and balance your body, while Hally guides participants through a brief meditation practice to quiet your mind and approach the present moment with calm awareness and appreciation. Participants must bring their own mats and water, and must register beforehand through spotfund.com (classes range up to $15.) Proceeds from each class will benefit The School Mindfulness Project, which uses an educational model to improve the physical, emotional and academic well-being of school communities. Masks will be required during the classes, which start at 6 p.m.
Every Tuesday beginning Aug. 11 will be not just for Philadelphians, but for all furry friends as well. Yappy Hour will feature all of Sunset Social’s menu offerings for owners, as well as chef-made dog treats for their pups. A portion of all of the proceeds will be donated to the PSPCA and Morris Animal Refuge, both of whom will also be bringing adoptable puppies to the rooftop during Yappy Hour for on-site adoptions.
Wednesdays are now dubbed ‘Field of Dreams’ at Philly’s own park in the sky with Sunset Social and will feature games and movies on the park’s projector screen. Games include corn hole, ladder golf and Connect 4 beginning at 5 p.m. with a line-up of films starting at 8 p.m. The slate of movies includes ‘The Great Gatsby’ (Aug. 5), ‘Ford v Ferrari’ (Aug. 12), ‘Avatar’ (Aug. 19), ‘500 Days of Summer’ (Aug. 26), and ’10 Things I Hate About You’ (Sept. 2).
Thursdays will transport Philadelphians to island life with Tropical Thursdays on the Green. This event will feature guest chef Kiki Aranita of Poi Dog Philly who will be serving up poke bowls to benefit her small business, which had to close due to COVID-19. According to the release, drink and dinner specials include $5 rum runners, $5 jerk burgers, and, best of all, college students eat and drink for half-price with their student ID. A DJ will be spinning summer hits from 5 to 8 p.m., before a movie from the will be shown on the big screen. The movie line-up includes ‘Blue Hawaii’ (Aug. 6), ‘Muscle Beach’ (Aug. 13), ‘Beach Party’ (Aug. 20), ‘Beach Blanket Bingo’ (Aug. 27), and ‘Gidget’ (Sept. 3).
Weekends at Sunset Social will be just as exciting as the weekdays during their new line-up. Fridays will hold Golden Hour from 5 to 7 p.m. starting Aug. 7, and those who head to GH will be able to enjoy half-off draft beer and frozen drinks on the socially distanced green. Then on Saturdays, families can head to the urban park to enjoy picnics on the grass filled with Saturday morning cartoons and specials from noon to 3 p.m. Specials include $2 cheeseburgers, $1 hot dogs and $5 drafts, and the movie line-up includes ‘Frozen 2’ (Aug. 8), ‘Gummi Bears’ complete series (Aug. 15), ‘Tom & Jerry 50th Anniversary’ (Aug. 22), ‘Toy Story 1’ (Aug. 29) and ‘Toy Story 2’ (Sept. 5).
