At this time last year, Michael Vick was preparing to hold a clipboard. How quickly things change in South Philadelphia.
Now, the reigning Comeback Player of the Year is talking about contract extensions and delivering the Eagles their first Super Bowl championship. The quest to Indianapolis begins today at Lehigh University, where the Eagles open their first training camp under Vick’s leadership.
“I’m ready to take it to the next level,” Vick told reporters yesterday. “It’s more pressure, but that’s what I thrive off, and that’s what comes with being a quarterback and being a great one. That’s what I’m on a quest for — not only for myself, but also the other guys in that locker room.”
The Eagles will have to pack a lot into a short span, as they have exactly 15 days to prepare for their first preseason game. Vick organized a handful of informal workouts during the lockout, mostly working on passing drills with his receivers and running backs.
“It’s been a long wait. I can’t wait to get back to work,” said running back LeSean McCoy.
With that all in the rear-view mirror, it’s time for the players to get on the same page as the coaches. Especially on the defensive side of the ball, as Juan Castillo takes over as the new defensive coordinator.
“It’s going to be tough as far as learning the plays,” said linebacker Jamar Chaney. “As far as me being in shape, that’s not a problem.”
