Eagles break minicamp, Camp Kelly on deck

The Eagles wrapped up spring minicamps under new coach Chip Kelly Thursday. Next up, training camp.

The Eagles broke minicamp Thursday, leaving players to their own devices for the next six weeks. When they return, they’ll enter Chip Kelly’s first training camp.

Jobs will be on the line, for real. For Kelly, it will be his first time deciding who gets dumped to the scrap heap.

“There are 90 guys here when we start camp July 25, and there are going to be 53 when the season starts,” Kelly said. “That is just the reality of it. They know that going in and they understand that.”

Kelly handed out strength and conditioning programs to his charges before they left. While NFL rules forbid player-coach interaction until camp opens, they will be expected to work out on their own.

“They have a program,” Kelly said. “By league rules, it’s not like we can say, ‘Let’s meet at these certain times.’ They can lift here, but we can’t have any instruction with them or anything like that. They’re on their own to work out.”

Vick: Make a decision

There’s still no clear-cut winner in the battle to be the Eagles’ starting QB. Mike Vick and Nick Foles continued to split first-team reps this spring at a pretty even rate. Apparently, Vick would like to know who is the winner by the time training camp opens.

“Hopefully, Chip makes a decision before training camp and we won’t have to answer that question,” Vick told CSNPhilly.com, “so we can go out there as quarterbacks and just focus on this season and not answer questions about competition every day.”
