Eagles extend Herremans as free agency opens

Todd Herremans was still under contract. The Eagles could have waited to extend their versatile right tackle.

At the end of the day, the team thought he was too valuable to ignore. The Eagles signed Herremans to a three-year extension yesterday worth a reported $21 million. Herremans, who still had two years left on his original deal, is signed through 2016.

“They’re happy with what I’ve been doing here, and I’ve been working hard,” Herremans said. “I haven’t been complaining about my contract. While I was playing guard, I think I was playing at a high level and felt a little underpaid, but that comes with those early deals that I did after two years and then the five-year extension.”

Herremans started 16 games at tackle last season — 15 at right tackle, one at left — after primarily playing left guard in his first six seasons. He is the second-longest tenured member of the Eagles’ offense (95 games). Since Mike Vick is a left-handed quarterback, the 29-year-old was in charge of protecting Vick’s blindside.

“I’m sure that figured into it, but Michael is all over the place in the pocket so everyone is on his blind side at some point,” Herremans said.

Herremans added that he would like to finish his career in Philadelphia and bring the city a championship.

“It’s just fun to be here and I really want to be on the team that brings a Super Bowl to Philadelphia,” he said.

Evan almighty

Starting left guard Evan Mathis hit the open market yesterday, but he wants to come back to Philly. Mathis played 1,024 snaps and didn’t allow a single sack, per ProFootballFocus.com.

Said Herremans: “He texted me earlier today and congratulated me. I said, ‘Thanks, and hopefully we can get you done here soon and back in green.’ Who knows how that’s going to work out, you know?”
