The Philadelphia Eagles made a slightly surprising hiring on Wednesday. Just days after beating his former team, Nick Sirianni decided to bring in a man who he worked with in Indianapolis and who was fired a few short weeks ago – Marcus Brady.
Brady was fired just days after Matt Ryan was benched. The former Colts offensive coordinator was initially brought in as a QB coach and was promoted to both QB coach and later offensive coordinator.
Prior to that, he played the quarterback position and coached in the CFL, filling a role as an offensive coordinator for both Montreal and Toronto.
His work with the Colts is hard to diagnose. If we’re going off his work as a QB coach, he had one year with Andrew Luck, who was already a well-established name, and then had the same with Phillip Rivers, and a year with Carson Wentz, who probably didn’t listen to anything anyway.
If we’re going off what the offense accomplished (or didn’t), that’s also tricky. He didn’t call plays for the Colts, per ESPN, and instead game-planned and designed the plays Reich would call. The former Eagles offensive coordinator suffered the same fate as Brady a few weeks after his firing.
At the time of his firing, the Colts ranked 30th in points per game. They rank 31st over their last 3 games, so it’s not like much has changed in that department.
Perhaps Nick Sirianni just wanted an extra ear from someone who understands his offensive philosophies. It would hardly be surprising given the lack of creativity and poor play-calls we’ve seen recently and if that’s the case, it’s a pretty good decision.
There is also the possibility that current Eagles offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen emerges in Head Coach conversations. Perhaps Nick Sirianni wants to get someone lined up as a potential replacement. That doesn’t need to happen, and there are current coaches who would make sense, like WR Coach, Aaron Moorehead. But forward-thinking does seem to be the forte of both Roseman and Sirianni, so you wouldn’t blame them for doing exactly that.
