Eagles name team captains ahead of 2024 regular season

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced their team captains ahead of the 2024 NFL campaign, with 7 players given the honor.

The team made the announcement on X (Twitter) as preparations for the new season continue to ramp up. The captains are as follows:

A.J. Brown (2nd season as a captain)

Jake Elliott (3rd season)

Brandon Graham (6th season)

Jalen Hurts (4th season)

Lane Johnson (3rd season)

Darius Slay (3rd season)

Jordan Mailata (1st season)

This is a smaller group of captains in comparison to last season, with both Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce retiring this past offseason. DeVonta Smith, who was given captaincy last year, surprisingly hasn’t received that opportunity in 2024, although it could simply be a case of the Eagles entrusting a condensed group of veteran leaders to set the tone following last years’ shocking spiral.

Jordan Mailata gets to wear the ‘C’ for the first time in his NFL career. The franchise left tackle is now entering his seventh season as a pro and has become one of the cornerstones of this team over the last 6 years. His journey has been nothing short of remarkable, and it’s great to see his efforts recognized in this way.

The rest of the Captains have all been given that responsibility on more than one occasion, with Brandon Graham now the longest-tenured on the team.

You can definitely see a pattern here. All of the Captains this season are leaders in emerging positional groups. Whether it’s the likes of Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt on the outside, or a pair of exciting rookie corners, the Eagles are inundated with youth and having pillars to lead by example will be pivotal to their success.

The Eagles will face the Green Bay Packers in Saô Paulo next weekend in the season-opener.
