Eagles Notebook: Hey Kevin Kolb, shutup

Kevin Kolb didn’t start very many games for the Eagles. But he sure did spend a lot of time on the sideline, so you could argue that he probably knows the team’s plays better than anybody.

With that in mind, the Arizona QB took a few shots at his former team earlier in the week.

“During the two-minute drill, you almost feel guilty,” Kolb told 94.1 WIP. “Mike’s [Vick] sitting there giving the signals, and I’m standing there on our sidelines, screaming at our corners, ‘Hey it’s a go ball, hey he’s running a screen, hey he’s running a slant.’”

On Thursday, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg met with the Philadelphia media and quickly diffused the entire situation. You could say he took a thinly veiled shot at Kolb.

“Yeah, that’s a story you know to anticipate,” the coach said. “An ex-player who is on another ballclub and he’s injured and wants so badly to be a part of a win. In the two-minute, if I remember correctly, we only called two plays on the line. We completed the third-down and then dropped a big one. We anticipate those kind of things. We do a pretty good job of self-scout and they saw very little of anything that they saw before as far as formations, motions, and shifts.”

Anyway, believe whomever you want in that tug-of-war. Fact is, Cardinals won the game.

FOUR DOWN. The Eagles were missing four players at Thursday’s practice at the NovaCare Complex: T King Dunlap (concussion), WR Jeremy Maclin (shoulder, hamstring), CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle), QB Mike Vick (ribs). Vince Young took the bulk of the snaps at quarterback, while S Nate Allen (concussion), DE Brandon Graham (knee) and G Evan Mathis (toe) were all full participants Thursday for the second straight day.

COOPER TO THE RESCUE. Riley Cooper has been taking the first-team reps at receiver with Maclin injured. That’s interesting to note, considering Jason Avant started in DeSean Jackson‘s absence (read: punishment) last week. However, Mornhinweg indicated that the team would use everybody, including Steve Smith, Avant and maybe even the recently-promoted Chad Hall.

LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAIN. Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said the reason Nnamdi Asomugha wasn’t on Larry Fitzgerald more often last week, specifically on that 37-yard bomb that setup the game-winning touchdown, was because it was Asante Samuel‘s matchup. Samuel never switches from the left side of the field, according to Castillo.

“The hard part is that Asante Samuel has intercepted more passes than anybody else in the NFL in the last, I think, four years — you could probably help me with that better than I could,” Castillo said. “And he’s done it on the left side. So I mean, he’s pretty good over there and I think that’s enough said, there.”

HALL PASS. Chad Hall, who was just promoted to the 53-man roster before Wednesday’s practice, may see time as both a kickoff and punt returner. Dion Lewis hasn’t been as sharp as the Eagles had hoped, so they put Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on kickoff duty last week but he got hurt taking one back. Special teams coordinator Bobby April left the door open on Hall getting a chance this week.

“He could get an opportunity. Coach [Andy Reid] will make that decision more than I will. We haven’t gone into detail about anything except the probability that he’ll dress,” April said.
