Eagles Notebook: Mike Kafka back at practice, limited snaps

The Eagles trimmed the roster to 75 players with a few injury-related moves.

Left tackle Jason Peters was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, while defensive tackle Mike Patterson was put on the reserve/non-football illness list. Guard Mike Gibson (hip flexor) was sent to injured reserve, and receiver Jamel Hamler was waived.

Peters and Patterson are eligible to return and practice with the team between Week 6 and Week 9.

The Eagles have until 9 p.m. Friday to cut the roster down to 53.

Kafka returns to practice

Injured quarterback Mike Kafka returned to practice Monday after he was cleared by doctors. Kafka, nursing a broken left hand, took a few snaps and his status for Friday night’s preseason finale isn’t known. If Kafka is healthy enough to go, he’ll likely split quarterbacking duties with Trent Edwards.

“I did just about right, just about enough as I thought,” Kafka said, of his number of snaps Friday. “[Hand] feels good, feels pretty good. Loosened it up a little bit, feels good being back out there.”

Kafka hasn’t played since the first preseason game against Pittsburgh, but the third-year man said he’s been studying.

“The way I approached it was learning as much as I could,” he said. “You can definitely get better by watching, so I worked on that.”

Despite limited reps in the preseason, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg didn’t rule out Kafka stepping right in as No. 2 on the depth chart. Impressive rookie Nick Foles appears to have that role right now. Don’t count out Edwards either.

“All of those are possibilities. We’ve had very few discussions on that, up-to-date,” Mornhinweg said. “There has been some, but very few.”

Castillo explains linebacker switch

One day after Akeem Jordan started running with the first-team defense, defensive coordinator Juan Castillo explained the reasons behind the decision. Jordan took Brian Rolle’s spot on the weakside.

“Akeem Jordan has probably had one of the better training camps since I’ve been around,” Castillo said. “We grade our players every day, and Akeem has been making plays. He just deserved a chance.”

Rolle told reporters at Flight Night that he expects to reclaim his starting spot “soon.” Rolle said he fully expects to be starting Week 1.
