Eagles Notebook: Mike Vick probably out, maybe for good

Don’t plan on seeing No. 7 under center Sunday in Washington.

Andy Reid wouldn’t confirm that Mike Vick will miss this week’s game, but the coach said the quarterback had a “pretty significant concussion.” Reid revealed that rookie Nick Foles would get all the first-team reps at practice.

“Preparation is very important. We’re going up against a good football team, the Redskins,” Reid said Monday. “Again, another NFC East rival and a loud place. It’s important that he has the silent count down and understands that, which he got to work on during the preseason. Then, that he has his fundamentals down and he knows the game plan.”

Foles was called into emergency duty against Dallas after Vick left with a concussion. The backup made a few mental mistakes down the stretch, including a costly interception and fumble. Foles finished 22-of-32 for 218 yards, with a 44-yard touchdown strike to Jeremy Maclin.

“I’ll tell you he did a nice job of keeping his eyes down the field when he was under pressure,” Reid said. “He had a couple of nice plays there. There were a couple of plays there that he’d like to have back, but I thought he did a pretty good job with that. I thought he got the ball out on time. He handled pressure well when it was in his face and he didn’t move.”

Vick has struggled with concussions in recent seasons, so the Eagles will be extra cautious with him. Reid said Vick had a bad headache Monday morning and he’ll be undergoing the league’s concussion protocol. Reid wouldn’t rule him out for Sunday, but it appears to be heading in that direction. Vick was told to stay home and rest.

“We’re kind of going off of Mike’s symptoms. We want him just to stay home right now and rest,” Reid said. “When he feels a little bit better and can get where he needs to, then we’ll go from there.”

Vick done for 2012?

Andy Reid has maintained that when and if Mike Vick is healthy, he will be the starting quarterback. However, with the season slipping away, speculation about his future is always a hot topic.

On Monday, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports posted a story claiming that Reid will rest Vick for the rest of the season and turn the keys over to Nick Foles. Cole cited sources confirming that the front office is ready to start rebuilding around the rookie.

“I’m 99 percent sure that’s exactly what you’re going to see happen,” sources told Cole. “Andy is going to go to [owner] Jeff [Lurie] and [general manager] Howie [Roseman] and say, ‘Let’s go with Foles and make the transition to the next era.’ “

Birds add line depth

The Eagles made a minor roster move Monday when they inked Jake Scott to a one-year contract. The 31-year-old can play both guard and tackle. To make room, the Eagles cut guard Julian Vandervelde.

Scott, a fifth-round draft pick in 2004, has started 121 career regular-season games and nine playoff contests with the Colts (2004-07) and Titans (2008-11). He played under Eagles offensive line coach Howard Mudd in 2006, when the two were in Indianapolis.
