The Eagles enjoyed an off-day Wednesday, well kind of. A few players, most notably Todd Herremans and Jason Avant, showed up at the practice facility to say hello to Brian Westbrook. The former Eagles running back officially retired as a Philadelphia Eagle, with a brief ceremony and press conference.
Earlier in the day, ESPN.com posted a story regarding Mike Vick’s health. Rob Vito, CEO of Unequal Technologies, the company that makes the Kevlar vest he’ll wear in the Birds’ season opener, guaranteed Vick’s safety. It is made of military-grade, battle-tested composite material.
“I guarantee he will not get hurt,” Vito told ESPN.com.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie (or co-owner now the he and Christina are getting divorced) will hold his annual, state-of-the-team address Thursday at 4 p.m. before the preseason finale at the Linc. Lurie was originally scheduled to meet with reporters on the morning of Aug. 5, the day Garrett Reid was found dead in his Lehigh dorm room.
Lurie is expected to talk about Andy Reid’s future with the team (he has two years left on his contract), the owner’s recent divorce and the ouster of former president Joe Banner.
Speaking of Brian Westbrook, the running back took time to thank several of his former teammates at Wednesday’s press conference, most notably Donovan McNabb. Westbrook called the former Eagles QB a “good friend” and the best quarterback Philadelphia has ever seen.
“He [McNabb] called me yesterday and said, ‘Just represent [and] do what we always do.’ I am thankful for that. He was the best quarterback the city of Philadelphia has ever seen,” said Westbrook.
