After the Eagles committed 13 penalties, missed two easy field goals and failed to defeat last-place Washington Saturday afternoon, there wasn’t much hope left for a playoff berth.
But there was a chance. Two Dallas losses and a win over New York next week would give Philly a miracle boost to an NFC East crown.
Unfortunately, but not surprisingly it wasn’t to be, as the Cowboys demolished the Colts 42-7 Sunday night, effectively ending the Eagles’ season.
After three straight losses, it was a long time coming as several players stepped up to take the blame for the 27-24 defeat.
“It stinks,” Eagles kicker Cody Parkey, who missed field goals from 34 and 46 yards, said. “I missed kicks and we lost the game.”
“We invented ways to lose this game,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “We did so many things to give it away.”
Vinny Curry, the defensive lineman who committed a key penalty said, “You can blame me.”
The Cowboys win their first division title since 2009 and the Eagles will play a meaningless game Sunday vs. the Giants.
“We’ve got one game left,” Kelly said prior to the Dallas win. “We’re going to go get ready, get focused on the New York Giants. There are a lot of other things that have to happen besides that that we have no control over.”
