It’s been a whirlwind of an offseason for Jalen Hurts. Following a three-point loss in Super Bowl LVII, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has been a busy man. First, Jalen Hurts inked a $255 million contract extension then underwent ankle surgery to fix an old college injury. He also received a master’s degree from Oklahoma and starred in his debut Nike commercial.
Jalen Hurts, sporting a slick Rhude trucker’s hat, addressed the media at the end of Eagles OTAs on June 8 where he caught everyone up to speed on what has been a hectic three months. Nothing to worry about. He remains the same guy he’s always been.
“I’m the same guy,” Jalen Hurts said when asked specifically about his contract. “Numbers may have changed but same guy. Same approach, same goals, same dreams.”
Then, Jalen Hurts provided the perfect answer to a question regarding all the roster changes. He could have focused on Howie Roseman’s draft class. Or the additions of D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny. Or new slot weapon Olamide Zaccheaus. Nope. He singled out one name.
“Kelce’s back,” Jalen Hurts said. “That stood out.”
Jalen Hurts spoke for nearly 13 minutes and touched on a variety of topics, including what he learned from last year’s Super Bowl run to what the promotion of Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator means to him. Let’s take a look at everything the franchise quarterback said.
On expectations for 2023, coming off a Super Bowl run: “Starting from ground one again, thinking about it holistically, you know last year is over. There are a ton of experiences that we definitely documented and deposited in the bank to learn from, if you will. And we will learn from and we have learned from, but it’s a day-by-day thing, and I think everybody is taking that approach and we’re excited to just kind of continue that progression.”
On Brian Johnson taking over as offensive coordinator: “I remember watching him play growing up, and kind of seeing how things have shaken out, him being a quarterback coach for two years, and now being the offensive coordinator. I think it’s going to be good for us. And I think that could definitely be a benefit for us, with the relationship that we have…”
Jalen Hurts continued on, ”Obviously, it’s a change, a little bit of a change in how we view things, how he views things as a play-caller. But, in terms of us navigating and being on the same page, I think that’s the number one goal and that’s something I reiterate to him all the time.”
On getting a master’s degree in human relations at the University of Oklahoma: “Something I started and I wanted to finish.”
On what he’s been working on to improve: “My focus has been turning my weaknesses into my strengths. Now somebody is going to ask, what are my weaknesses? That’s for me to know. But it’s just all about getting better. I think about all the different things last year maybe that I did at a high level and then, to my standards, that I didn’t do at a high level. But I think the thing that kind of keeps me going is being my biggest critic, and certain things are allowed, but for me, it may not be.”
On doing the Nike commercial with singer Teyana Taylor: “She reached out to me and said she had an opportunity for me. She said I was the perfect fit for it, and I really appreciated that, and we kind of went from there … the neighborhood mailman in the little video — it was a fun experience, glad I got to try it.”
On Nick Sirianni coaching him hard and saying he is the most coachable player ever: “I’ve been coached hard my whole entire life so in terms of accountability, I think that’s really big. And I think just being in those big games and being in these moments, that matters because the details truly matter, so you definitely need someone to correct you on them, and ultimately everybody needs to be on the same page when those moments come.”
On bouncing back from the Super Bowl loss: “Stay diligent. Embrace everything that comes with it. The road is not always pretty. It’s not always what you would think it would be. But embrace the different things that come along that journey. I always say that there is no arrival, there’s only the journey…”
Jalen Hurts went on to say, ”And I use so many different things to fuel me to keep going, and that’s all I ever want to do — that’s all I ever want to be, is just be the best player I can be. Be the best teammate I can be. And that takes a lot of constructive criticism, self-criticism, and also self-awareness of knowing who you are and where you are, and how far you’ve come.”
On how Quez Watkins has looked so far this spring: “Quez has been doing a really good job. He’s been playing a number of different positions, and he’s been doing a really good job at them. So Quez is a guy that I came in with, I worked out with him before we both got drafted here. We tore it up on the scout team our rookie year, and I have all the trust in him. He’s hungry. And he’s used everything as fuel and I’m glad he’s taking that approach. I’m excited to see the show that he puts on this year.”
Jalen Hurts looks to be focused on finishing what he and the team started last season. After a gut wrenching finish in the Super Bowl loss last season the Eagles have retooled and reloaded for another run. Can Jalen Hurts and the Eagles finish the job in 2023?
