Eagles rally to beat Jaguars

Mike Vick looked a little rusty Saturday, but there’s no cause for concern.

The most meaningful game of the preseason is in the books.

The Eagles rallied to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-24, over the weekend. Mike Vick went 15-of-23 for 184 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback looked shaky at times, but overall Vick seemed to have a firm grasp on Chip Kelly’s offense. Vick isn’t expected to play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the New York Jets.

“I had an interception and we had a fumble coming out of the first quarter. All of those could have resulted in points,” Vick said. “Other than that, we did good. The good thing about this game is there are things we can work on to help us get up and down the road.”

On Sunday, the Eagles started the arduous task of trimming the roster. The team released 12 players, including safety Kenny Phillips and linebacker Jamar Chaney. The roster stands at 76 and must be whittled down to 75 by 4 p.m. tomorrow. The deadline for the 53-man roster is Aug. 31.

Three players that have nothing to worry about are LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown and Chris Polk. The Eagles might have the best running back depth in the entire NFL. Brown ran 11 times for 92 yards and a touchdown, with Polk adding 23 yards and a score. The only negative for the crew was a costly fumble near the goal line by Brown.

“We were our own worst enemy,” Kelly said. “We turned the ball over three times. Those are the things that kill drives … the turnovers and the penalties.”

Vick agreed with his coach and took it a step further.

“I think we need to do a better job of finishing,” Vick said. “We were able to put drives together, but were not able to finish off in the end zone.”
