Eagles seeing exactly what they need to from Jalen Hurts

What is believed to be the largest aspect that the Philadelphia Eagles’ season hinges upon is the performance of second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts as the main man under center this season.

All signs seem to be pointing to that as Nick Mullens and Joe Flacco don’t necessarily provide the stiffest competition for the starting job this season — unless the Eagles pull off a blockbuster for Deshaun Watson, which looks increasingly unlikely with each passing day.

While first-year head coach Nick Sirianni and Eagles brass aren’t ready to crown him with the starting job, Hurts appears to be winning everyone over.

“Every day we learn more about Jalen Hurts,” The Athletic’s Zac Berman told 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday. “He struggled early on this summer in camp, but he has gotten better each week. He looked like the best quarterback on the field during the joint practices this week.”

That included a strong showing in joint practices this week with the New England Patriots.

“There is a fast-growing sentiment among Eagles’ players that Jalen Hurts is undoubtedly the franchise QB,” ESPN’s Jordan Schultz reported. “His work ethic, intangibles, and overall skill level have captured the entire locker room. Players I’ve spoken with are consistently blown away by Hurts – on/off the field.”

Fox NFL analyst Jay Glazer added that “the confidence in Jalen Hurts from teammates became much, much clearer. He’s winning those guys over.”

It’s a noticeable uptick in his forecast after a mediocre 3-for-7 showing in the Eagles’ preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, his ability to respond is making an impression on his coaches.

“I thought he played really good,” Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen said. “What I know about him is he’s never satisfied. That’s what makes him good. He wants to be great. We corrected a few things, but he’s ascending in the right direction, and we’re excited about his progress.”

There is always a grain of salt that comes with preseason performances, but the seemingly unanimous support and praise that is being heaped on Hurts indicates that the Eagles do, in fact, have their man.
