Eagles sign T.J. Edwards to 1-year contract extension

The Philadelphia Eagles and linebacker T.J. Edwards agreed to a one-year contract extension worth a reported $3.2 million ($2.15 million guaranteed) on Monday, per multiple reports.

The deal ensures that he remains with the Eagles through the 2022 season, a timely reward after his big day on Sunday.

During the first quarter of Sunday’s victory against the New Orleans Saints, the 25-year-old’s interception of Trevor Siemian sparked the Eagles’ big day.

Joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Edwards continues to improve as a pro. He already has a career-high of 76 tackles along with one sack, a fumble recovery, and that interception against the Saints in 11 games (9 starts) this season.

“It feels really good,” Edwards told the team’s official website on Monday. “I came in here in 2019 as an undrafted guy and just wanted to put my head down and go to work and try to just get better at something and truly get 1% better every day.

“I knew if I did that good things will happen and good things will come. It feels really good to be at this point and I just want to do what got me here and keep my head down and go back to work.”

Now in his third NFL season, Edwards has 176 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions in 39 games (25 starts) as he continues to carve out his niche in Philadelphia’s defense.

“T.J. brings a physicality that really is contagious,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said. “He’s a good communicator with the defense and talking to everybody. He’s playing really good football. And sure, those guys from Wisconsin, that played as a Badger, my experience with those guys is they’re tough and they’re nasty and they can play physical ball. I’m sure glad he’s playing the role he’s playing right now.”
