Eagles sign WR Torrey Smith after cutting ties with Connor Barwin

The free agent frenzy started early, with several Eagles targets coming off the board as DeSean Jackson reportedly agreed to become a Buccaneer and Kenny Britt agreed to become a Brown.

But an hour or so after freeing up cap space (about $8 million to be exact), ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Eagles had struck a deal with former 49ers and Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith for $15 million over three seasons.

The Birds had been rumored to have interest in Smith midseason last year and will pull the trigger to bring in a very speedy 28-year-old wide out that will no doubt help Carson Wentz spread the field a bit more on offense.

Smith was very unhappy in San Francisco, and his stats reflect that as he failed to eclipse 700 yards receiving there in two seasons. The former second rounder out of Maryland has over 4,200 yards receiving over his career with 37 touchdowns. He will be a much-needed and shore-handed veteran presence in the Eagles offense.

As of late Thursday morning Philadelphia was also reportedly still in on a potential trade Saints’ Brandon Cooks and a potential landing spot for two marquee free agents in wideout Alshon Jeffery and cornerback A.J. Bouye.

Stay tuned as free agency heats up in advance of the 4 p.m. start of the new league year.
