Eagles Training Camp Notebook: The depth chart is beginning to take shape after preseason opener

The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the practice field on Sunday following their preseason victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Here’s everything you need to know from Day 11 of Training Camp.

Eagles Injury report

As expected, there were a few more players on the injury report following a preseason bout. Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam both missed practice on Sunday, leaving the Eagles a little light at tight end. CJGJ is still nursing a shoulder injury, and Parris Campbell missed the action with a groin strain. The wideout also missed the preseason opener, so there are chances for the likes of Britain Covey, Ainias Smith, and John Ross to all make their mark.

Covey is the man currently making the most of those chances. He looked exceptional in the preseason opener and started as the WR3 during today’s action according to Andrew DiCecco. As one of the league’s most explosive punt-returners last year, Covey looks to have taken another huge step in his development which is fantastic news for the Eagles, who have lacked a consistent speed threat for quite some time now.

On a more positive note, it was cool to see footage of Cooper DeJean working with a trainer today. He’s missed the entirety of Training Camp up to this point and while no timeline on his return has been made known, seeing him go through some basic exercises and moving fluidly is encouraging.

The Eagles did also sign former Broncos Safety Caden Sterns today to fortify the position. For more on the move, click here!

team shape updates

Mekhi Becton appears to be one step closer to locking in the starting RG position following a wobbly outing from Tyler Steen against the Ravens. We’re also seeing more of Kelee Ringo following his impressive day at the office on Friday. While he isn’t in-line for starting reps, he could be a valuable piece to rotate into games as the year wears on, and a key backup off the bench.

Cornerbacks continue to climb

Speaking of cornerbacks, both Isaiah Rodgers and Quinyon Mitchell punched in another solid shift down at the NovaCare Complex. Rodgers has all but secured the CB2 spot now with James Bradberry continuing to work at Safety, and turning heads against the likes of A.J Brown is only going to benefit his progress after a year away from football. With that said, it’s hard to tell he’s ever been away!

Mitchell will likely start the season in the nickel. The 23-year-old out of Toledo has been given a vote of confidence from Vic Fangio, with the defensive coordinator eager to get the rookie on the field, and it looks as though he’ll be taking over from Avonte Maddox in the slot to start the year.
