Eagles Training Camp: Hurts looks strong in first padded practice of summer

After a few practices of mediocrity, the Eagles offense got itself back into gear on Tuesday morning in what was the first padded practice of the summer. Here is everything you need to know:

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts bounces back

After one bad practice and two mediocre ones, Jalen Hurts looked the best he has so far in the early portion of camp. He attacked the opposing defense with a plethora of solid, and accurate deep passes that allowed A.J Brown and even Jalen Reagor to make easy catches.

The fact that it was in full-pads and his best session was in 11v11 is absolutely an encouraging sign and shows the improvements are there. The real question regarding Hurts will be consistency. Even in practice Tuesday, Hurts would make a nice throw, but then throw an incomplete pass.

Consistency will be key for Hurts this season, but his practice execution is clearly increasing.

Reagor and Brown shine

Competition is important in Eagles training camp. DeVonta Smith and James Bradberry reportedly had back-to-back reps where one beat the other in a competitive drill. It’s important and great to see.

The two big names that stood out though were A.J Brown and Jalen Reagor.

Brown has shown the skillset and flashed his big-play ability many times throughout camp thus far and is clearly the #1 receiver. He has the right mindset and is clearly the perfect combination for Jalen Hurts.

Reagor today was a surprise. After Quez Watkins got hurt, Reagor ran more with the 1’s and made a few excellent plays on deep passes. The Eagles haven’t really pushed the ball downfield this camp, but it’s excellent to see Reagor bounce back and play well early in camp.

Reagor is fighting for a roster spot, but if he continues to produce, he could very well be in consideration for the team’s fifth receiver.

Dean runs with the 1’s

The Eagles have had a ton of success with their linebackers in training camp to this point, but Nakobe Dean has been relatively quiet.

It was more of the same today, but Dean finally got his first crack with the 1’s. The fact that Dean hasn’t been in the spotlight isn’t a bad thing. The linebacker is growing and learning a new scheme, and the big plays will come.

It is worth though to note that with him getting reps with the first team, it’s far likely we will see a lot of Dean in pre-season games.

Injury update

It wouldn’t be the first 11v11 work without some bumps and bruises. Isaac Seumalo reportedly got injured but it doesn’t look too serious. It’s been an unlucky couple of years for Seumalo who has battled injuries throughout.

If his injury problems persist, it could lead to Jack Driscoll or others stepping into the right guard spot. Seumalo wasn’t the only offensive player to go down though.

After Zach Pascal missed practice, it appeared that Quez Watkins also got hurt and did not participate in team drills. Reagor made the most of his opportunity with Watkins gone, but the expectation is that the sixth-round pick will start in the slot when the season kicks off.
