Eagles vs Jets: All you need to know ahead of preseason opener

Preseason football is here. The wait is finally over and excitement has never been higher.

The Philadelphia Eagles are all too familiar with their first opponent. The New York Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles have played each other in a preseason contest in each of the last 20 years. The game also has taken on new meaning as the Eagles and Jets both are reportedly looking to play their starters for at least a series or two on Friday night.

We have all the information you need here to watch, and players to keep an eye on throughout Friday.

Eagles Players to Watch

Jalen Hurts

The Eagles offense hasn’t been bad in camp, but they haven’t been spectacular either. Jalen Hurts has had both good and bad moments in camp as he looks to continue to grow into the franchise quarterback the franchise is hoping for.

With Nick Sirianni mentioning that the starters will play a series or two, it’s important for Hurts to look good against a Jets defense that has gotten better on paper, although with still a ways to go. We don’t need to see game-breaking plays from Hurts. But if he can lead the team down the field to set up a field goal, or even better, a touchdown, then that’s all you could ever want to see.

Nakobe Dean

Nakobe Dean is one player who could see a huge chunk of playing time this week. The rookie linebacker has impressed in camp but is currently considered to be a backup heading into week one of preseason behind TJ Edwards at the MIKE.

It’s important for Dean to get some game reps in so that the Eagles can see just how much further their third-round pick needs to go before becoming a starter.

Jalen Reagor

The Chicago Bears and several other teams seem to have interest in Reagor’s availability. The Eagles won’t be giving away a first-round pick for nothing, so how Reagor plays on Friday could very well tilt the scales on if he stays or goes.

With Britain Covey making an excellent impression as a returner, whoever of the two makes their mark on special teams more could hold the leverage come September. If Reagor is able to make a couple of plays, I think he could find his way on the 53-man roster.

If not, he could very well be moved.

Undrafted Corners

Mario Goodrich and Josh Jobe both went undrafted and both were relative surprises. Goodrich, from Clemson, has looked good in camp and has shown the close-out physicality that made him such a commodity on one of the best defenses in college football. Jobe on the other hand has shown the same ability in press coverage through the dog days of camp.

Both players are seen as roster-bubble players and could use a good preseason showing to make their case to stand out from a crowded young corner room.
