How to celebrate Earth Day in Philadelphia

Earth Day in Philadelphia takes place Saturday, April 22, but there are multiple opportunities beyond that date to celebrate and help the City of Brotherly Love turn green. And we’ve got the scoop on them all.

Guided Hike and Mediation in Fairmount Park

On Saturday, April 22, at 3 p.m., Philadelphians can join a guided hike and meditation led by ecotherapist Krista Nelson. The hike starts at Belmont Plateau—a location with a strong Earth Day connection, being the spot where thousands of Philadelphians met on the inaugural date to demand environmental action—and from there, the group will hike along the Trolley Trail while stopping at different spots for moments of meditation and reflection.

Earth Day Celebration and Community Clean-up

The Fishtown Neighborhood Association and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department are inviting neighbors to celebrate Earth Day by helping clean the park around Fishtown Rec Center. The cleanup and celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and will include a Kindness Rocks Art Project, family-friendly activities, featured sustainable businesses and more.

For those participating in the cleanup, there will be trash grabbers, brooms and trash bags provided at Fishtown Rec at 10 a.m. on a first-come-first-serve basis. Participants can grab supplies and head out to wherever they want to clean, then return to the rec center with  the supplies and bags full of trash no later than noon. Organizers will help collect the trash and mark the streets that were cleaned.

An afrocentric Earth Day celebration

The ROOTS Art Show will celebrate Earth Day at the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center on Saturday, April 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. The art show is a afrocentric artistic experience that highlights the work of different artists, working in a variety of mediums. Black creatives are the focus during the show, with a goal to encourage artists and the community to come together, and celebrate creativity and artistic expression.

There will be live paintings, music and performances, as well as works of art available for purchase. A wine tasting experience is available for those interested and costs $30.

Kimpton Hotel Monaco and Palomar Philadelphia

In celebration of Earth Day in Philadelphia, the Kimpton hotel line has launched a few different green options. Firstly, the “Choose to Conserve” package, offered at both locations, allows guests the option to pre-emptively opt out of housekeeping services, according to a release. And by doing so, the package provides a donation to the Philadelphia Horticultural Society’s City Tree Program, and gives guests a late check-out at 1 p.m.

Kimpton also launched a “Plant Pals” program, which places regionally sourced plants in guests rooms, which they pick when they check in. Both the Kimpton Hotel Monaco and the Kimpton Hotel Palomar are participating in this program with their respective local plant partners, Pure Design and Il Exotics.

For Earth Day in Philadelphia, Sor Ynez will be hosting a Spring Fling market while also launching a new menu. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can head to the restaurant to check out work from local artists from the Keepin’ It Small collective on the venue’s patio. Chef Alexis Tellez will also be launching new brunch offerings—highlights include papas bravas, a steak and egg torta, breakfast burrito, chickpea scramble, huevos rancheros, a tuna tostada and more.

Cafe Court

If you’re looking to celebrate Earth Day in King of Prussia, visitors can head to the Mall’s Cafe Court from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, for a few different activations. Firstly, the first 100 guests to check in will have the chance to create their own air plant terrarium. All visitors, however, will receive sustainable goodies from participating retailers (while supplies last) and can become part of Sephora’s new Pact Collective initiative. And finally, visitors can learn more about the sustainability efforts of brands like Timberland, Levi’s, Brumate and True Food Kitchen and donate gently used clothing, shoes and accessories through the Give Back Box program while there.

Penn Museum

If you can’t celebrate Earth Day in Philadelphia on Saturday, you’re in luck. Next week, on April 26, Penn Museum is hosting an Eco-Science Social, which they describe as “part happy hour, part science fair” featuring zero-waste food snacks and talks with the leading experts on climate change including Joy Harjo, the first Native American U.S. Poet Laureate, who will be in attendance to read her poetry and talk about reconnecting with the Earth. The event will take place from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
