Engineer killed after accident at Phila. Media Network printing plant

A railroad engineer was killed Friday morning after being crushed by an 1,800 pound roll of newsprint at Philadelphia Media Network’s printing plant in Conshohocken.

The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m., according to PMN spokesman Mark Block. The cargo train, which was operated by Brandywine Valley Railways, was carrying 70 rolls of newsprint for PMN, which owns the Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com. As the engineer opened the door to unload the rolls, the rolls had apparently shifted during transport and one landed on the engineer, pinning him between the freight car and the platform.

The engineer was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released, but he is a Delaware resident in his early to mid-40s, Block said.

“Philadelphia Media Network would like to extend its condolences to the deceased victim and his family and his colleagues at Brandywine,” Block said.

The incident is under investigation.
