EURO 2024: Betting preview & predictions for July 2nd’s knockout fixtures

The knockout stage of EURO 2024 is coming to a close. Tuesday’s fixtures are the last of the round of 16 and will decide the final par of teams to advance to the next stage. With a real David and Goliath matchup on the cards, it promises to be another exciting evening of action.

A true David vs Goliath contest sees Romania and the Netherlands slug it out in the round of 16 on Tuesday, but with the amount of surprises we’ve seen so far, it’s going to be hard to write off yet another upset.

The Netherlands have been massively underwhelming so far and despite a strong attacking game in their group stage finale, it wasn’t enough to stop Austria putting 3 past them and topping the group in the process. The draw might well have worked out a little more favorably, at least for now, and it should be mentioned that their win over Poland and tie to France should still inspire some level of confidence.

However, the true underdog darlings of this tournament have been Romania. A tremendous 3-0 win over Ukraine, predicted loss to Belgium, and inspired draw against Slovakia put them through to the knockouts in their first ever showing at the EURO’s. Beating the Netherlands will be far from easy however.

What is interesting is that even in the 2-0 loss to Belgium, they still had 14 shots and 45% possession. Just because they’re underdogs, it doesn’t mean they’re out of the reckoning and will play super defensively.

As far as betting goes, the Netherlands should see out this match, and the worry here is that outside of their opening win against Ukraine, Romania have only found the back of the net once. The Netherlands simply have too many stars to falter here and they need a bounceback victory. I like the Netherlands to win, but I’ll be backing under 2.5 goals here at +100.

Austria vs Turkey

This promises to be the more entertaining of the two games. Austria really made their mark on the EURO’s with an emphatic win over the Netherlands, and their only loss in the tournament was a 1-0 defeat to France. Climbing out of that group is a huge achievement in itself, but they won’t want to stop there. With high-pressing and attacking football at its core, the Austrian side look primed to cause some real problems for whoever they come against.

As for Turkey, this is a very youthful side. With wonderkid Arda Güler leading the charge, this is a team that is still very much building towards a solid future. The expectations of knockout football could weigh heavy on a relatively inexperienced side, whereas Raif Rangnicks leadership for Austria could prove to be the difference-maker.

Austria have beaten Turkey two of of their last three meetings and I can’t see that result changing here. As good as Turkey have been, Austria just play too free-flowingly to keep down for long. I do like the OVER 2.5 goals market here, as well as Marko Arnautovic to score anytime at +165.
