EURO 2024: With the first knockout stage now in the rearview mirror, all eyes turn to the quarter finals. A rollercoaster week of thrilling goals, shocking moments, and enthralling extra-time clashes have left us with 8 teams who will compete int the second round of the knockout stage. Which team is favored to finish its stories and lift the coveted trophy ahead of the quarter finals?
England | +400 |
Spain | +400 |
Germany | +450 |
France | +450 |
Netherlands | +700 |
Portugal | +850 |
Switzerland | +1400 |
Turkey | +4000 |
The odds race has certainly tightened after the round of 16. England are still regarded as favorites after scraping a late win against Slovakia, but Spain now join them as joint-favorites after demolishing Georgia. Their road now gets tougher, however, with a clash against host nation Germany in the quarter finals.
Here’s a quick Look at the quarter final fixtures:
England vs Switzerland
Spain vs Germany
Portugal vs France
Netherlands vs Turkey
To say England have the easiest route to a semi-final berth would be an understatement, with every other side but the Netherlands facing a EURO juggernaut. But it’s not like the Three Lions have been overly convincing in their journey so far. They barely topped a very winnable group and it took a miraculous equaliser in the dying moments from Jude Bellingham to force extra time, without which they’d already be on the plane home.
The Netherlands could be a fun wildcard bet. Turkey did very well to beat Austria in their round of 16 matchup, but the Netherlands might have finally found some form at the right time after limping out of the group stage like England. They were able to cleanly get past the debuting Romanians last round and have another ‘light’ matchup here that they simply must take advantage of.
Of the other 4 teams, Portugal look like the weakest. A missed Cristiano Ronaldo penalty almost cost them dearly until Slovenia reached the shootout and were unable to convert a single PK. Portugal look just as vulnerable as England, and France could well be too strong for them to extend their hopes of a EURO victory.
Spain and Germany are intriguing bets too. La Roja started the tournament priced at +700 and after a dominant group stage and important win in the knockouts, they’re now joint favorites. They’ve looked as strong as any team in the tournament, but having to unseat the host nation, who are also firing at an alarming rate is hardly going to be easy in what could be one of the most interesting matchups of the entire tournament.
