From Feb. 7 to the 17 various stages and theatre companies of Philadelphia will come alive with different shows and productions all set to intrigue, entertain and move audiences like never before. There are so many talented performers, directors and designers participating in this show-stopping week, it’s hard to choose just one incredible play to experience. A week doesn’t quite seem like a long enough time to indulge in all of the moving shows- but Philadelphians surely can try. Here is everything you need to know about Philly Theatre Week 2019.

Philly Theatre Week consists of 81 organizations, 100 events and 315+ performances during a ten-day span. This incredible event showcases the vibrant and diverse theatre scene in the tri-state region and helps make theatre even more accessible to the community. Select performances will also have workshops and panels to truly make the theatre experience relatable and special. 

“We are proud to continue Philly Theatre Week as a new annual tradition in our region, celebrating the breadth and diversity of artists and organizations that make Philadelphia a vibrant hub for performing arts,” said Theatre Philadelphia Executive Director Leigh Goldenberg in a release. “Philly Theatre Week was designed to introduce new audiences to our region’s theatre scene, while encouraging existing theatre-goers to step out of their comfort zone and try something new with a variety of events and discounted price points.”

Everyone can find a show they like, there is quite an impressive repertoire to choose from. Local highlights include Philadelphia Dramatists Center’s “Heartbreak Hotel;” Curio Theatre Company’s “Three Sisters, By Rashdash, After Chekhov;” Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium’s “Dream Girl by Elmer Rice;” Val Dun & Jenna Kuerzi’s “Johnny Depp: a Retrospective on Late Stage Capitalism;” and many more that will provoke thoughts and entertain all spectators. Local academic institutions are also showcasing incredible theatre experiences including Temple Theatres’ “Fabulation by Lynn Nottage;” Villanova Theatre’s “Youth by James Ijames” and University of the Arts “Equinox New Student Play Festival.”

There are shows for the family (Arden Theatre’s “Little Mermaid), shows just in time for Valentine’s Day (Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater‘s “The Love Experiment”), classic shows (The Wilma Theater’s “Romeo and Juliet”), musicals (1812 Productions’ “Broad”), shows honoring Black History Month (Beacon Theatre Production’s “The Spirit of Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I A Woman?”) and many more. 

“Theatre Philadelphia wanted to create a new signature program that would draw even more attention to the region’s theatre organizations and artists,” added Goldenberg in a release. “We wanted to make a big and impactful statement about the importance of theatre in our city and region, and bring artists together in a collaborative and equitable format. Like Philly Beer Week, Center City Restaurant Week or Philly Tech Week, this festival celebrated theatre alongside our city’s other flagship events that are nationally known and recognized.”

Theatre Philadelphia has partnered with the international ticketing platform TodayTix for the 2019 Philly Theatre Week to offer reduced-price tickets exclusively through the app. Philadelphians can score coveted tickets for select shows at discounted prices (ranging from $15-$30).
