Sure, there are serious social messages of body positivity, conspicuous anti-consumption, personal freedom and cycle safety – to say nothing of the Zen of removing yourself from convention– to be found while biking nude. But, honesty, the Philly Naked Bike Ride, now in its 10th year, lives and dies by the motto given to us by the great George Clinton: free your bum and your mind will follow. Plus, with humidity, it’s going to be nearly 100 degrees out. Strip, ride, bring your own message, or no message at all. Or don’t even take off of your clothes, if you don’t feel ike it – just ride along.
This year’s Philly Naked Bike Ride will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, rain or shine, starting at 5 p.m. There is no one place to meet, although you can check all the social media registers connected to philadelphianakedbikeride.wordpress.com. And officially, the Philly Naked Bike Ride is supposed to last until 8 p.m., but we can tell you from personal experience on Washington Avenue, that bare-butt riders are hanging late into the evening, striped nude.
Along with an actual “code of conduct’ (philadelphianakedbikeride.wordpress.com/code-of-conduct) that would seem to explain away any form of goodness and general behavior, there are a few solid rules for the Philly Naked Bike Race: don’t harass, don’t take photos unless you ask permission and don’t try to take a selfie with a naked bike rider, if you haven’t gained their trust and approval.
Like everything good about the Philly Naked Bike Ride 2018, it is free to ride, and free to be. If you feel like donating, to keep the word press-based website wheel greased, hit up philadelphianakedbikeride.wordpress.com. If you want to get body painted along the way, the website offers ever-changing information as to who is painting what, where, and for how much.
