Family Field Day in full swing at FDR Park this weekend

This Saturday holds a special occasion for all ages: Family Field Day at FDR Park will be in full swing on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all locals are invited to participate.

The active event will host a few different opportunities to join in on sports (like baseball, softball, soccer, football, girls’ rugby, and more), plus check out giveaways, food trucks, a DJ, face painting, balloon artists, free ice cream and other surprises.

The event, which is free, will take place at the FDR Boathouse Lawn in front of the American Swedish Historical Museum at 1500 Pattison Ave. Tickets are not required to participate, but, registration is recommended online.

Family Field Day will also provide information highlighting the FDR Park Plan.

As a release states, the FDR Park Plan provides a balance of nature, water, and activity. It’s the first of its kind in Philadelphia to incorporate climate change projections and climate resiliency, and the renewed FDR Park will have more trails, more meadows, more nature, and more access to water.

FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY

That means high-quality playing fields, state-of-the-art athletic fields for youth and adults, concessions, trails, a permanent home for the Southeast Asian Market, and a second signature play space and more.

The new plan will also bring on the addition of vicinities for youth sports, including 12 multi-purpose fields for soccer, football, and lacrosse that will be a part of the 12 percent of the total 348-acre park devoted to active play. The park’s tennis courts will be moved to this area, and for the first time in the park’s history, this area will also bring basketball courts to the park as well as picnic areas, the release finishes.

In the meantime, families can continue to head to FDR Park for  salsa classes and dance parties, volunteer opportunities, food tours of the Southeast Asian Market, pop-ups at the Anna C. Verna Playground, and more year-round fun.
