Week 1 in the NFL was historically bad for offensive output. Point scoring is at a five-year low in the early going and the run game has been absolutely atrocious.
In the action last week, just 19 failed to run for over 100 yards and just three teams scored more than one touchdown on the ground.
The league is evolving and the passing game has never been more important.
Which brings us to your fantasy team.
Using the flex position, it’s best to lean toward a wide receiver or tight end in PPR leagues — or a pass-catching running back like Tarik Cohen or Carlos Hyde.
Also look at running back match ups. Of the defenses that allowed the fewest years in Week 1, the Browns, Cowboys, Bills and Lions each allowed less than 50 yards on the ground.
Which means owners of running backs on the Giants (Shane Vereen, Paul Perkins), Broncos (C.J. Anderson, Jamal Charles), Ravens (Terrance West, Javorius Allen) and Panthers (Christian McCaffery, Jonathan Stewart) need to think twice before starting fringe running backs on those squads.
On the contrary if you own Texans RB Lamar Miller, Oakland RB Marshawn Lynch or any Dolphins RB Jay Ajaji, throw those backs in to the RB1 spot for their Week 2 match ups against teams futile against the run.
Other players to sit:
Carson Wentz, Eagles QB — If Tom Brady couldn’t do it against the Chiefs defense, second-year Wentz won’t be able to. Especially in Kansas City.
Frank Gore, Colts RB — Marlon Mack actually hard more touches in Week 2 and the lackluster offense will likely fall behind and emphasize the run against Arizona.
Other players to start:
Jacquizz Rodgers, Buccaneers RB — The Bucs have been sitting and stewing all week and will be an offensive force in Week 2 against the Bears. Start anyone you can from Tampa.
Tyreek Hill, Chiefs WR — Hill has scored a 60-yard or longer touchdown in five straight games an NFL record. The Eagles are missing top cornerback Ronald Darby. Advantage KC.
