Father killed, stepmom injured in North Philly home invasion

A father of six children is deadand their mother injured after an overnight home invasion and robbery in Hunting Park.

Around 1 a.m. Monday, two men — at least one of whom was armed with a shotgun—forcibly entered through a window into the family’s home on North Seventh Street near Erie Avenue in the North Philadelphia neighborhood, NBC10 reported.

The two suspects moved through the house to an upstairs bedroom, where they found 35-year-old Hakim Rahman and his wife, 40. According to police, the suspects demanded money, then opened fire on the couple, 6ABC reported. Rahman was shot in the abdomen and pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife, stepmother to the six children, was shot twice and transported to Temple University Hospital in critical condition with wounds on her arm and face, NBC10 reported.

All six children, who range in age from 5 to 13, were all inside the home at the time of the shooting, police told 6ABC. Several of the children were inside the bedroom where the shooting took place.

Investigators reportedly said they believe the suspects knew the father, and his criminal past may have a role in the home invasion, according to 6ABC. The wife, who was conscious despite her wounds, said she recognized the nickname of one of the suspects.

Three spent shotgun shells were found on the scene, and more shells, a skull cap and a shotgun were found nearby, according to police.

The children’s grandparents picked up the children early Monday, according to NBC10.
