Female kicker has ‘good ball skills’

It’s true — and yes, we are aware this has absolutely nothing to do with Philly sports.

However, it’s an amazing story, with an even more amazing quote, so it must be discussed.

Mo Isom was a senior goalkeeper on LSU’s women’s soccer team. After leading the squad to its third straight NCAA tournament appearance, she was named Homecoming Queen for the 2011 season.

Now, she is getting a three-day tryout to earn a spot on LSU’s football program as a place-kicker. She has one year of NCAA eligibility left. Her story is fascinating on so many levels.

For one, the fact that Isom is even getting a chance to compete for a spot on a juggernaut like LSU — they lost to Alabama in the national championship this past season and always seem to be in title contention — is a talking point. Adding more intrigue, her dad committed suicide in 2009 and later that same year she lost control of her Jeep and landed in a ravine.

OK, now that the tear-jerker part is out of the way, here’s the money quote from LSU coach Les Miles.

“This was really a bad day for anybody to kick because the wind was just so strong,” Miles told USA Today. “But obviously she’s got ball skills. She’s been around it.”

Keep it classy, Les — good ball skills. She’s been around it, sure.

Jokes aside, the whole story reminds us of Kathy Ireland and those famed
“Fightin’ Armadillos. “Welcome to foot … ball!”
