Five people were shot in West and Southwest Philadelphia, one person fatally, in the space of five hours yesterday.
Police said the violence broke out shortly before 3:15 p.m. on the 1400 block of South 20th Street near Reed Street in Point Breeze. A man, 23, was shot once in the chest and rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is in critical condition.
About an hour later, Alisa Canty, 31, was sitting in a black Honda Accord with her 5-year-old daughter on the 7300 block of Theodore Street in the Eastwick section of Southwest Philadelphia when an unknown person opened fire into the car.
Canty was shot in the chest and pronounced dead a short time later at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her daughter suffered a graze wound to the head and is in stable condition at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Though multiple outlets report that Canty lived in Delaware, police said they have her address listed as the unit block of West Chester Pike in Ridley, Pa. She was reportedly in the area to pick up her boyfriend, who may have been the target of the gunfire. Investigators said the motive is listed as narcotics.
Police said that, around 7 p.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in the leg, side, and buttock on the 6100 block of Walton Avenue in West Philadelphia. He is in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
A fifth victim, a 20-year-old man, was shot once in the lower back on the 600 block of Union Street near 39th and Wallace streets in the Manuta section of West Philadelphia at 8:40 p.m., police said. He is in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
No arrests have yet been made in any of the incidents, police said.
