Flyers clicking after record-setting night

It’s only happened four other times in franchise history. Make it five.

Eight different Flyers scored in Saturday night’s 9-2 rout of Columbus. The players — James van Riemsdyk, Jaromir Jagr, Claude Giroux, Max Talbot, Jakub Voracek, Sean Couturier, Wayne Simmonds, Matt Carle — became the first group to do it in almost 30 years.

The Orange and Black put five goals on the board in the first period, forcing Columbus goalie Steve Mason to the showers.

“Things just seemed to be clicking out there,” Van Riemsdyk said. “I don’t know, we were making good passes up and down the ice and making smart plays with the puck. When you do that it makes the game look a lot easier out there.”

The rookies are making a huge impact, too. They have combined for 25 points in the first 14 games. Couturier, the player the Flyers selected with the draft pick they acquired in the Jeff Carter deal, has five goals after scoring twice on Saturday.

“The whole team stepped up and brought their A-game,” Couturier said.
