Flyers’ defense packs Powe-erful punch

Aside from a pair of goals earlier this month, Mike Richards hasn’t lit the lamp since Oct. 10 against Anaheim. So where’s all the Flyers’ offense coming from?

In what is becoming a growing trend around the NHL, teams are getting a significant portion of their scoring from the blueliners — the guys who aren’t paid to dent the twine.

The Flyers are third in the NHL in scoring behind only Washington and Atlanta. Ten of their 62 goals have come from the likes of Chris Pronger, Braydon Coburn and Matt Carle.

Perhaps the biggest surprise has been from Darroll Powe. The second-year defenseman out of Princeton has three goals in his last five games and has already equaled his output from last season.
“I’m a little more comfortable [playing] in the [NHL] and a little more confident,” said Powe, who netted his sixth goal Monday against the Devils.

“My linemates are doing a great job and I’m finding some open space and they’re feeding me. Sometimes the puck just finds the back of the net and right now I think that’s kind of happening.”
