Flyers fall in OT against Coyotes, 5-4

The Philadelphia Flyers found themselves on the losing end of a hockey game for the fourth time in five games at Mullett Arena. It’s the second overtime loss in a row. They cannot finish games in regulation, and are yet to win in overtime this season. There are two more games left on the road trip and if more go to overtime, they don’t need another similar result.

There were highlights amongst all the frustration. Morgan Frost had a career night on a line with James van Riemsdyk and Owen Tippett. Also, a point toward the standings is better than none at all.

Frosty the Centerman

At the forefront of the Flyers offense, there was a chill in the air. Frost had himself a night! He posted a career-high 4pts (1G, 3A.) The first came early in the second, van Riemsdyk slid the puck from behind the net to Frost in front. Frost beat Karel Vejmelka short-side.

Frost and JVR took on Vejmelka again. He slotted the puck to van Riemsdyk, who fired the puck home. Returning the favor, Frost set the assist for a van Riemsdyk goal.

This line doesn’t need to be bothered. With 1:18 remaining in the second, Frost did a spin-o-rama while van Riemsdyk sent the puck from the half boards. Tippett fired the puck past Vejmelka to tie the game, 3-3.

Keller Hat-Trick

Clayton Keller killed the Flyers defense.

Keller torched Rasmus Ristolainen in the second, en route to a breakaway goal. Prior to that, he started the scoring on the powerplay in the first. In the penalty box? Ristolainen.

Adding insult to injury, Keller decided to complete the hat-trick in overtime. With :22 left in the extra period, Keller beat Hart glove side to give the Arizona Coyotes their first overtime victory at Mullett Arena. It was the first hat-trick for Keller in the NHL.

Overtime Woes

In consecutive games, the Flyers took the Vegas Golden Knights and Coyotes to overtime. Hart started a career-high seventh straight game and battled it out between the pipes. He blocked 24/29 shots by Arizona.

Hart is one of the most valuable players for the Flyers in 2022-2023. Travis Konecny is another skater who produced since returning from injury. He notched four points in his last five games.

Konecny and Hart don’t typically seem tired after three periods. John Tortorella pushes his guys to be conditioned through extended time.

Last night, they seemed worn out. Two defensemen is also a pressing matter with one forward when the team lacks finishers. As soon as the Coyotes possessed the puck once in overtime, they made sure it was the last chance for the Flyers. Adjustments must be made in three-on-three situations, or expect more overtime losses.

Frost is the ‘Diamond of the Tilt.’ He had a career-night.
