Flyers Fall To Islanders in preseason clash: What we learned

The Philadelphia Flyers are nearing the end of their preseason, with one game remaining on the road in Boston and one at home against New Jersey. However, last night against the Islanders was most likely the last time most of the players on the ice would be wearing orange and black for the foreseeable future.

The roster mainly consisted of AHL players, which allowed them to get one last final look before most likely being sent down to Leigh High Valley. While this game didn’t have as many penalties, the Flyers scored two power-play goals, with Anthony Richard and Rasmus Ristolainen finding the net.

The overall pace of this contest was slower than some of the previous games, but in the net, Ivan Fedotov looked pretty decent, playing more than half the game. The main problem with Fedotov is that he needs to find the ability to move around better in high-traffic situations.

Alexei Kolosov made his Flyers debut shortly after Fedotov’s stint. Kolosov is skilled in navigating the traffic in front of the net with speedy movements. It’s already known that Sam Ersson will be the starting goalie, and Fedotov will be his backup. However, it’s always good to have goalie depth in the system.

While players such as Erik Johnson, Scott Laughton, and Joel Farabee all tallied up assists, it was also good to see Brendan Furry score a goal. Furry will most likely spend his time with the Phantoms, but getting the opportunity to play these preseason games for the Flyers is an absolute confidence boost for when he gets sent back down.

While there was no real player that positively stood out in this game, Adam Ginning did struggle. He had yet another turnover, which Fedotov was luckily able to stop. However, this doesn’t help his chances of making the team given the caliber of opponent he was facing.

The Flyers head to Boston to take on the Bruins on Tuesday night.
