Flyers forwards Scott Laughton, Nick Cousins heading in different directions

Coming into training camp, the Flyers had a position battle in front of them between Scott Laughton and Nick Cousins. That was silenced a bit as the two began working on the same line early on, but as the preseason has progressed, the two players remain in a competition.

On Tueday, head coach Dave Hakstol provided some insight on the trajectories each player has had thus far. It appears as though they’re two different trajectories.

“I’ve been happy with Nick’s camp,” Hakstol said. “Nick did a good job up the middle. He’s an agitator, but he’s also a guy that can make plays and one that we need to make plays. He can produce some offense in that third line role.”

In Laughton’s case, he started out well, but has cooled off recently after two somewhat lackluster games.

“I was very happy with his first part of camp,” Hakstol said. “The last couple of games haven’t been as effective, but there are ups and downs as you go through a couple of weeks of training camp.”

The Flyers are hoping Laughton can get back into the positive direction he was at a few weeks ago, but at this point, he’s finding himself as one of the potential three remaining cuts, especially with the impressive play of Travis Konecny, Jordan Weal and Roman Lyubimov.

Meanwhile, Cousins is an absolute lock, something he wasn’t quite sure of in the beginning of September.
