Flyers GM denies report saying Pronger will retire

Good days and bad days. So has been the common refrain from Flyers GM Paul Holmgren when discussing the health of Chris Pronger.

The team captain’s career is in jeopardy after suffering from post-concussion syndrome. While the Flyers want to give Pronger all the time he needs, the odds of him returning seem slim.

“We’re still holding out hope that he can [come back], that he starts to get better [and] turns a corner,” Holmgren said recently. “I would say right now there haven’t been any signs that show us that’s in the near future. But, we’ll see how it goes the rest of the summer.”

In the meantime, the 37-year-old has been helping as a sort of talent scout. Pronger is evaluating potential draft picks and free agents.

“We’ve kept him involved,” Holmgren said. “He’s watching video of players and he came to our scouting meetings for the first day and listened to what takes place there.”

Holmgren added that Pronger still suffers from headaches. Right now, he’s visiting his wife’s family in St. Louis. Holmgren denied a report that Pronger was retiring.

“There’s no truth to that,” the GM said.

If Pronger can’t return, Claude Giroux is expected to be named the new captain.
