Flyers go for season series sweep of Red Wings

Two words that are usually not associated with the Philadelphia Flyers are ‘hot streak.’ With two games left in their seven-game homestand, the Flyers won three of their last five; not too shabby.

On Thursday, the Flyers battled the Minnesota Wild to a 5-4 shootout win. Hoping to continue a successful trend, they’ll host the Detroit Red Wings. Philadelphia isn’t playing for a playoff berth, but they won’t be tanking ahead of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

“You wouldn’t believe the mail I get. Just stop sending me mail about tanking. There’s no such thing with professional athletes tanking. They would not be able to live with themselves if they went home and did something to try to disturb an outcome of a game. It is asinine. Don’t bring up that subject. It’s wrong.”

John Tortorella; 3/24/2023

Detroit Red Wings (31-31-9)

The Detroit Red Wings aren’t a powerhouse, only leading the Montreal Canadiens in the Atlantic Division. In the last ten games, the Red Wings are 3-7-0. They’ll look to avoid the season series sweep by the Philadelphia Flyers; the Flyers won in Detroit on January 21st and at the Wells Fargo Center earlier this month.

Alex Nedeljkovic (2-5-2, 4.01GAA, 88%SV) will start. He is an emergency recall from the Grand Rapids Griffins while Ville Husso is out with a lower-body injury. It’ll be the first time Nedeljkovic starts against Philadelphia, which would be true for Magnus Hellberg, too.

Dylan Larkin (26G, 42A) is the heavy artillery. This month, he notched eleven points (4G, 7A) while being held out of the stat sheet twice. Yes, the Flyers were one of the teams to silence Larkin.

Here’s the tentative lineup for the Detroit Red Wings:

Veleno-Larkin-Raymond
Erne-Copp-Perron
Kubalik-Suter-Chiasson
Berggren-Czarnik-Luff

Walman-Seider
Maatta-Hagg
Edvinsson-Oesterle

Nedeljkovic
(Hellberg)

Philadelphia Flyers (27-32-12)

They’re on the right side of shootouts in Philadelphia!? In case you missed it, or aren’t used to it, the Philadelphia Flyers are 2-1 with the game on the line in a shootout this season.

James van Riemsdyk (10G, 16A) was the only skater to score in the shootout that put the Flyers over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. Today could be a milestone game for van Riemsdyk, two goals away from 300 in his NHL career. John Tortorella will call his number if today’s game enters a shootout.

Tyson Foerster (2G, 4A) scored his first NHL goal in an overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on March 18th. On Thursday, he helped send Philadelphia into overtime, beaming a laser past Marc-Andre Fleury. Since making his NHL debut, Foerster continues to develop, earning praise from Tortorella:

“He’s [Foerster] just got some personality with the puck; some really great swagger with the puck. Another really big play for him. It’s why I leave him out there on the shootout. I want to see what he can do right away.”

Here’s the tentative lineup for the Philadelphia Flyers:

Farabee-Cates-Tippett
van Riemsdyk-Hayes-Allison
Lemieux-Frost-Foerster
Zamula-Laughton-Bellows

Provorov-York
Sanheim-Ristolainen
Seeler-DeAngelo
