Flyers head back to drawing board after Devils’ loss

The Flyers know what needs to be fixed. They didn’t play with desperation. They stood around watching, instead of moving their feet. They didn’t get (any?) pucks on net.

All those things must change if the Orange and Black expect to escape New Jersey and re-take the series lead.

“We got away from our game plan,” Eric Wellwood said. “We didn’t have the jump in the second and third periods. Next game, we’re going to have to play a full 60.”

The Flyers endured a painfully woeful second period, where the Devils spent almost 18 minutes in the Flyers’ zone. They didn’t register their first shot on goal until the 1:27 mark of the period.

“It’s tough to score from our zone,” Jaromir Jagr said.

As bad as Game 2 looked — and everyone in the locker room agreed it was ugly — there was one bright spot: the play of Ilya Bryzgalov. The on-again, off-again goaltender made 31 saves despite being under siege all night.

“Bryz was the only one who really showed up,” Danny Briere said. “We didn’t deserve to be up after two periods.”

Jagr agreed.

“He was unbelievable,” Jagr said. “If he wouldn’t be in the net and didn’t make those saves, it would be a different story. We would be down a lot. He kept us in the game, gave us a chance to win. We just had nothing.”
