It was a sweepless night in South Philadelphia Wednesday night as the Flyers staved off elimination for at least one more night, looking thoroughly impressive in a 2-1win against the Capitals in Game 4. Special teams was the difference –but this time in the Flyers’ favor as the orange and black will head down I-95 to DC for Game 5 Friday night, looking to pull off the improbable.
In stark contrast to every single time the Flyers have had a man-advantage prior inthis series, Philly came out of the tunnel fiery and playing aggressive hockey, as Shayne Gostisbehere netted the first Philadelphia power play marker early in the first frame giving Philly a 1-0 lead. About 20 minutes later in the second, another defenseman — Andrew MacDonald — fired a slap shot for the Flyers’ second goal.
The 2-0 advantage would be cut in half when the third started when TJ Oshie flipped a puck over the outstretched Michal Neuvirth (who would save 31 Washington shots) to make things 2-1.
A barrage of shots followed in the third, with Washington outshooting Philly 13-4during the third period, keeping thousands dressed in orange at the edge of their seats (if they weren’t already standing). But Neuvirth, who had played just once (in the season finale against the Islanders) in the space of about a month did not look the least bit rusty and will likely be innet again this weekend. Hearts were beating like mad as the Flyers slowly inched the clock to zero, withstanding wave after wave of Capitals attack.
The Flyers live to fight. Stay tuned.
