Flyers host Red Wings following trade deadline fallout

Last season, the Philadelphia Flyers were awful. It was one of the worst seasons in franchise history based on record alone.

Arguably, the 2022-2023 season is even worse. The record isn’t much better, and hockey operations continue to fumble every new opportunity to take a step forward. Adding a little sprinkle of awkwardness on top of the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline misery, the Flyers host the Detroit Red Wings.

Allegedly, the only offer Chuck Fletcher received for James van Riemsdyk came from the Red Wings, who decided to cancel a conditional trade in the last half hour of the deadline.

One win separates two four-game losing streaks by Philadelphia. It’s the third time this season the Flyers suffered a four-game skid. Zack MacEwen and Patrick Brown are no longer on the fourth line, traded for late-round picks in the 2023 and 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and Brendan Lemieux. Lemieux will make his debut for his new team versus Detroit.

Detroit Red Wings (28-25-9)

Led by Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings rank seventh in the Atlantic Division. They’re riding a five-game losing streak, most recently suffering a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders.

Dominik Kubalik (17G, 21A) had an assist earlier this season versus Philadelphia. He scored one goal over the last five games. In his career against the Flyers, Kubalik has three assists, yet to score. The earlier meeting between these two clubs resulted in a loss for Detroit, 2-1. Kubalik matched the physicality he received, but his giveaway led to the game-winner by Noah Cates.

Philadelphia Flyers (23-28-11)

Travis Konecny would be the leader of this Flyers roster, based on points. However, this team is led into battle on home ice by the 2022-2023 NHL all-star, Kevin Hayes. The aforementioned four-game losing streak recently featured a 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Rangers in a game that felt like it was played at Madison Square Garden instead of the the Wells Fargo Center.

Ivan Provorov (-12, 137BLK, 62GV, 42.7%CF) towed the line against the Red Wings back in January. He blocked eight shots in the road victory, proving his contribution in a tight contest. Throughout his NHL career versus Detroit, Provorov notched six points (1G, 5A) and secured a +3 rating in fifteen games.

Wade Allison (8G, 5A) tallied an assist in his only game against the Red Wings. Over the last five games, he has two points (1G, 1A.) Allison proved dangerous on the road in Detroit. With the assist, he just missed a tip in goal wide of the net in the third period. He buzzed all night in Detroit, stapling three more hits to his stat line.
