The Flyers announced today the signing of defenseman Ronnie Attard to a 2yr/$2.7mil entry-level contract. Attard, 23, was selected in the third round (72nd overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Flyers. Attard is the second NCAA player to ink an ELC with the Flyers in the last week.
Attard has played at Western Michigan University for the last three years and was an assistant captain this year. He had a stellar season this year with the Broncos. Scoring 36 points (13G, 23A) in 39 games, Attard was a stud on the WMU blue line.
WMU reached its first-ever regional semifinal this year and Attard played a key role in getting them to that stage. The Broncos eventually fell 3-0 to Minnesota, but it was a season to be proud of.
The Broncos finished with a 26-12-1 record and were the Worcester region’s top seed.
Attard is a 6’4″, 209lb puck-moving defenseman. He can create slick breakout passes for his teammates and has a great eye for reading the ice.
Along with his passing skills, come his goal-scoring abilities.
Attard is also able to play both ends of the ice. He can create those sweet breakout passes for his teammates, join the offensive rush, and also transition quickly back to defense. Once he gets moving, it’s hard to stop him.
Attard joins a long list of exciting prospects in the system that have the potential of playing with the Flyers for a long time. The ceiling for Attard is very high and he has the potential to play a major role in the future of the Flyers’ defense. The Flyers might have gotten away with a steal by drafting Attard. He could make his NHL debut as soon as Saturday versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.
